obamanation = abomination ?

I just watched a segment of the news that showed a teacher telling her kids that they now have someone who is the same color as them in a powerful position, and it gave the kids a joyous expression. But, what if Obama fails? Those same kids that were once jubliant will now be embarassed or shamed because society will tell them that never again will a black man lead this country. That seems very unfair of an assement, and only proves a double standard. Lets look at former president Bush who in my opinion had a terrible presidency not only for the bad decisions made but for the events that occured on his watch. If we say that we will not want another black president if he fails then why would anyone want a white president anymore. I believe that if the president succeeds in his goals to resurect this country, there will more of a chance for any minority to become president (including women) or any form of office. Is this system right...no but it is what it is and as much as it pains me to look at his race to bring affect to the country it is inevitable but I do disagree with the focus that everyone has on Obama's race. I dont believe we said when Bush took office "He will succeed because he is white like all the other successful presidents."

Something that wasn't discussed today in class was what he will do not only for racism but for classism. Now we havn't studied class specifically but I believe that the prosperity Obama could bring for Blacks he could also bring to low/middle class families that struggle and are oppressed. There is also similar pressure on him to succeed because as it stands the low/mid class people are struggling to survive and are being oppressed by the upper class as well as others but if Obama can provide support to the lower classes and eliminate the freebees and exemptions of the bigger companies and executives it will help to bridge the gap between the lower classes and the upper class. This can help to get other minorites in the upper class and executive positions. Failure however would result in either the status-quo remaining the same or conditions getting worse. I hope that Obama's presidency will bring nothing but prosperity for all but it takes more than just Obama to change America's ways; it takes all of us taking action agains racism/classism etc. to see CHANGE!

  1. I agree with you. I think that there are so many other sides to this new president than just race. I think it'd be interesting to talk more about class and classism, maybe we can try and get the class to talk about that somehow? :D

  2. huzzah! I understand that Obama's presidency is a HUGE step for minorities in America, but we were stuck on that when we first found he was running for president. He has so many other great redeeming qualities! It just proves how our society is still prejudice.
