"Gyped"

Just following up on what was talked about today with regard to the word gyped. I have a similar experience that I would like to share that I think is quite similar. In my baseball days as a team we would often blame errors or mistakes on people but we refered to these errors as being Jewed (i.e. He made an out at home instead of scoring so he jewed me out of a run). I believe that this word jewed has a negative conotation as well as being a jew within the team. Subconsciously I believe that there was a hatred of the jews imbedded in the mind of the people. The jews were viewed in this negative light by nazi soliders and were held responsible by many for WWII even though I believe this is a rediculous assumption. This just shows how people are unaware of what is part of themselves and how it comes out. People need to be more aware of what they say and that it can be hurtful to people that we may not include in everyday thought. I am saddened that it took me this long to realize that the scenario described is something that is done everyday without me realizing it. I have thus learned to watch my speech and make a conscious effort not to use words especially that puts down other minority groups.

  1. I would like to say, I myself had never associated the word "gyped" with gypsy until it was explained in class today. It is amazing and shameful the language we pick up and continue to spead without knowing the full meaning of the word or the groups in society it is offending. My Mom used to tell us as children, we should never say a word we couldn't spell and the same still holds true for saying words we don't fully know the origin of. Thanks for being honest, it helped open my mind as well!!!!
